Ömer Albayrak

Hegel and the Modern World

The specificity of Hegel’s place in the richness of 19th century German thought has become a phenomenon recognised both by those who embrace it and those who oppose it. A reading of Hegel – regarded by some as the philosopher of modernity and as the philosopher of postmodernity by others – within the context of modernity plays an important role in revealing, both, the meaning of modernity in his eyes and the specificity of Hegel’s position in terms of modernity. With reference to the differences between previous century’s view of Hegel and the view(s) of Hegel in the beginning of the present century, we will discuss whether Hegel’s propositions in the context of fundamental concepts such as tradition, future, historicity and freedom still have validity today.

Ömer B. Albayrak studied at Istanbul High School and graduated from Boğaziçi University Department of Philosophy. He completed his master’s degree and PhD at Galatasaray University. He gave lectures on philosophy at Istanbul Bilgi University, and on translation of philosophical texts at Boğaziçi University. He is currently a faculty member of the Department of Philosophy at Istanbul 29 Mayıs University.

Architecture & Yeşilçam

Moderators: Tuba Parlak (Editor in chief at Urbanista.com.tr), H. Cenk Dereli (Architect, MSc)

Our architectural memory is embedded in Yeşilçam movies -- in what the characters said, where they said it and what they saw in the background. Yeşilçam movies not only uncover how cities looked like in the past but also their growth, footprints new architectural approaches left, ways of settlement in changing urban spaces and all the problems arising from these developments. Then, how can we interpret our architectural history from the lens of Yeşilçam?

Event is free.

You can take your invitation from Akbank Sanat’s information desk one hour earlier from the event. Event is limited to 120 participants.

A Conversation About Magic and Photography with Kubilay (QB) Tunçer

Kubilay QB Tunçer, who is a recipient of the Merlin Award, one of the world’s most prestigious magic awards, is also a playwright who has written a number of theatre plays, a screenwriter who has received the Afife Jale Award, and an actor who played in numerous theatre plays, movies and TV series.

The principle axis of our conversation with this versatile artist will be to learn about his views and thoughts on the art of photography as an artist who has been directly involved with the camera in each of these various artistic branches, to learn about his expectations from a photo shoot as a stage artist, and his thoughts on the communication between the photographer and the artist being photographed.

In the conversation, which will be open to the participation of spectators with questions, we will have a chance to find out whether the artist finds a magical aspect in photography, what he thinks, as a stage artist in front of the camera, about portrait photography, and what are his expectations from a photographer when he is photographed, as well as a few other surprises he has up his sleeve as a magician.

Türker Armaner

Marx and the Transformation of Philosophy

Marx’s writings on freedom, property, alienation, political economy, bureaucracy, religious forms of existence, market and many other topics until the mid-1800s are among the subjects he examined during his period known as “critical approach”. During this period, Marx also proposed a transformation in the relations of representation and drew a broad framework about the historical position of philosophy. This framework also contained the changing position of “work” in human life due to industrial revolution, and Marx’s critical philosophy emphasized that the philosophical perspective should also take a new position in the nineteenth century.

Türker Armaner was born in 1968 in Istanbul. He received his Bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Hacettepe University, his Master's degree in Philosophy from Boğaziçi University, and his PhD from the Philosophy Department of the University of Paris VIII. He has lectured at various universities, and is a faculty member of the Department of Philosophy at Galatasaray University since 2004. He is the author of Kıyısız (Shoreless), Taş Hücre (Stone Cell) and Dalgakıran (Breakwater) books of short stories, Tahta Saplı Bıçak (Wooden Hilted Knife) and Hüküm (Verdict) novels and the philosophical inquiry titled Tarih ve Temsil (History and Representation).
