Murat Baç

“Rorty and Pragmatism”

It is generally accepted that the most influential thinker of Pragmatism in recent times is Richard Rorty (1931-2007). Rorty was not only influenced by traditional pragmatists such as Peirce, James and Dewey, but he also embraced the perspectives of thinkers like Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Davidson in his philosophy at certain points and made his mark with potent and still actively debated arguments on metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind and meta-philosophy. Rorty’s theses on issues such as truth and reality, and the possible outcomes of these theses in the political arena provide an interesting field of enquiry for philosophers.

Murat Baç is a lecturer at the Philosophy Department of Boğaziçi University. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the Department of Electronics Engineering at METU, and his PhD from the Department of Philosophy of the University of Alberta. He wrote two books, titled, Epistemology and Chaos Logos Hygiene Violence, and has various academic articles in international journals. His research interests include epistemology, ontology, concepts of reality and truth, philosophy of science, phenomenology and meta-philosophy.

Event is free.

You can take your invitation from Akbank Sanat’s information desk one hour earlier from the event. Event is limited to 120 participants.

Ömer Albayrak

Hegel and the Modern World

The specificity of Hegel’s place in the richness of 19th century German thought has become a phenomenon recognised both by those who embrace it and those who oppose it. A reading of Hegel – regarded by some as the philosopher of modernity and as the philosopher of postmodernity by others – within the context of modernity plays an important role in revealing, both, the meaning of modernity in his eyes and the specificity of Hegel’s position in terms of modernity. With reference to the differences between previous century’s view of Hegel and the view(s) of Hegel in the beginning of the present century, we will discuss whether Hegel’s propositions in the context of fundamental concepts such as tradition, future, historicity and freedom still have validity today.

Ömer B. Albayrak studied at Istanbul High School and graduated from Boğaziçi University Department of Philosophy. He completed his master’s degree and PhD at Galatasaray University. He gave lectures on philosophy at Istanbul Bilgi University, and on translation of philosophical texts at Boğaziçi University. He is currently a faculty member of the Department of Philosophy at Istanbul 29 Mayıs University.

Architecture & Yeşilçam

Our architectural memory is embedded in Yeşilçam movies -- in what the characters said, where they said it and what they saw in the background. Yeşilçam movies not only uncover how cities looked like in the past but also their growth, footprints new architectural approaches left, ways of settlement in changing urban spaces and all the problems arising from these developments. Then, how can we interpret our architectural history from the lens of Yeşilçam?
