The ways of collecting I-II

The history of art collecting

Dr. Zoltán Somhegyi

Dr. Zoltán Somhegyi – Art historian, Assistant Professor, Izmir University

The first lecture of the two-session series on the ways of collecting investigates the history of private, public and corporate art collections, from the beginnings till today. The desire of acquiring artworks can be traced back even to Antiquity – it is enough to think of the Roman habit of “collecting” Greek sculpture, and we can interpret some aspects of the Mediaeval cult of relics from this perspective too. After sketching up the origins, some contemporary art collections’ establishment and history will be examined, with a special focus on Turkey and the MENASA region, including also private collections made public, i.e. the important step of establishing a private museum.

The lecture is in English, and the second session, continuing this topic, is planned for 21 June.

Event is free.
