TIM BURTON @ MOMA November 2, 2009 - April 26, 2010

Tim Burton, a master in directing, provides the viewers with a spectacular feast of grotesque film. Burton, the "Goth" master of cinema, is retrospectively presented to the viewers at the exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), with private pictures, drawings and sculptures of the cinema industry which offer the soft-hearted side of the director.

Ron Magliozzi, the curator assistant of MOMA's film department, has been part of the team who put together the retrospective exhibition consisting of 700 pieces. Magliozzi has stated that "Director's (Burton) all works which are not cinematographic are extremely buffoon and have great energy." Magliozzi, who has also been to Burton's house in London commented that the artist has been greatly influenced by expressionism and that Burton has a vast collection of art. Curator Magliozzi also commented on the exhibition "The best way to explain the composition of the works and the outline of the exhibition would be Pop-Surrealism."

Burton grew up in Burbank, Los Angeles and started his training at the California Institute of Arts towards the end of the 1970s. Burton states about the exhibition at MOMA as "It is surreal for me to exhibiting at MOMA. I didn't grow up in a museum culture. Most of my works of art come from TV and films." Burton also said that he is influenced by the power and the energy of Matisse's and Van Gogh's works but that he would never want to be associated with a master artist.
