Akbank Sanat to Relocate to a New Home in Galata Following Renovation

A long-standing supporter of contemporary art in Türkiye and a key initiator of international projects across diverse artistic disciplines, Akbank Sanat is set to relocate its cultural centre. Following a comprehensive architectural restoration, the new home of Akbank Sanat will be Karaköy Yeni Han — a historic building in Galata owned by Akbank.

This meticulous restoration project aims to preserve the building’s historical and cultural heritage while transforming it into a contemporary space that meets the evolving needs of modern art. Once the renovation is complete, Akbank Sanat will continue to welcome art lovers in this special venue.

During the transition, Akbank Sanat will maintain its artistic programme without interruption across various venues, guided by its motto: “Art is Everywhere”.

Originally built in 1893, Karaköy Yeni Han served for many years as a home to commercial and financial institutions of its time. Since 1964, the building has been part of Akbank’s operations. In the new period, its transformation into the Akbank Sanat Centre will be led by architect Han Tümertekin. Karaköy Yeni Han will thus embark on a new journey — as a landmark for culture and the arts.

Derya Bigalı, Director of Akbank Sanat, shared the following statement on the move:
“As Akbank Sanat, we are proud to deepen our commitment to culture and the arts with this new chapter. Our Beyoğlu centre has been a cherished space for over 32 years, hosting more than 700 events and 200 exhibitions annually. We’re honoured to have played a role in shaping the area into a destination on the international art map. Now, while maintaining our emotional and artistic ties to Beyoğlu, we look forward to continuing our journey in another iconic district of the city — Galata — within the historic Karaköy Yeni Han. This carefully considered renovation will not only preserve the building’s heritage, but also redefine it as a space that meets the diverse and growing needs of today’s art world.

During the relocation, we will continue to engage audiences with a rich programme of events at partner venues. Guided by our mission to make art accessible and to empower artists, we will continue to move forward with dedication.”
