Musician Beyond His Time - İsmet Sıral and “Documentary of a Documentary”

You are invited to rediscover saxophone master İsmet Sıral, renowned for his collaborations with world-class musicians in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the big bands he founded and his visionary approach to music. Documentary of a Documentary, created by Dost Kip, director of the İsmet Sıral Creative Music Studio (ISCMS) and researcher, illuminates the 22-year process behind the documentary and festival, offering an in-depth look into İsmet Sıral's music, personality and vision.

The event will include a documentary screening, panel discussion, and listening session, delving into the profound impact İsmet Sıral had on the music world. It will also explore the conditions for setting up an international production center in a permanent space to preserve and advance legacy, and the future of creative music in Turkey. Following the talk, Ayşe Tütüncü and Meriç Demirkol will take the stage with an improvised set, referencing the ISCMS 2010 “Peddlers on Stage” performance.

Moderated by jazz radio programmers Leyla Diana Gücük and Nazlı Toprak, the session will highlight the universal friendships and musical journey of İsmet Sıral throughout his life, emphasizing his international influence, as demonstrated by the ISCMS events organized years after his passing. The two-hour session at HuginveMunin Art & Culture Platform will feature valuable materials from Sıral's personal archives, sound recordings, and testimonies from close friends, alongside excerpts from the unique concerts and events of the ISCMS project, which was part of the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture activities.

Moderation: Leyla Diana Gücük and Nazlı Toprak

Guest Speaker: ISCMS Director Dost Kip

Guest Performers: Ayşe Tütüncü (piano) and Meriç Demirkol (saxophone)
