Jazz Clubs Night: Batu Şallıel and Istanbul Swing Cats
Led by award-winning saxophonist Batu Şallıel, Istanbul Swing Cats is a one-of-a-kind ensemble that features the leading vocalists of Turkey’s jazz scene and future stars on the same stage. The band resurrects the essence of jazz styles born in early 1950s New York, such as cool jazz, hard bop, and modal jazz in Istanbul. Combining four wind soloists with a traditional jazz quartet, Istanbul Swing Cats manage to deliver both melodic richness and high energy, through original “combo jazz band” arrangements. Their repertoire spans a wide range, from the classics of composers like Dave Pell, Oliver Nelson, and Marty Paich, to the sophisticated harmonies of modern jazz and the rhythms of the street. Batu Şallıel and Istanbul Swing Cats promise a time-travel experience right back to the 1950s New York jazz scene. The band will take the stage at Pera 77 on October 1 as part of the Jazz Club Night events at the 35th Akbank Jazz Festival.
