"The Epistemology of Ignorance and What Lies Behind Indifference"

Speaker: Ebru Yetişkin

Moderator: Emre Şan

Contemporary epistemologists of ignorance have convincingly demonstrated that ignorance and indifference can no longer be defined merely as issues of lack of knowledge but are socially constructed and learned. Thus, a philosophical, political, and economic-psychological line of cultural production has emerged behind the adoption and valorization of ignorance and indifference. Within this cultural line, necropolitical elements such as cacophony, fatigue design, stupidity, racism, systematic exclusion, and destruction also find a place. In this seminar, which offers a critical perspective on digital technologies, a multidisciplinary reading of contemporary sociality will be made using recent studies on the epistemology of ignorance. How do we find power in embracing ignorance and indifference within the life and death processes created by techno-feudalism today?

Ebru Yetişkin is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology at Istanbul Technical University. After completing her undergraduate degree in Radio-TV-Cinema at Istanbul University, she pursued her master's degree at Louis Pasteur University and ITU, focusing on the impact of uncertainty in scientific knowledge production on policy-making processes. During her doctoral thesis, titled "Relational Thought," at the Department of Sociology of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, she worked as a guest researcher at the Center for the Sociology of Innovation at École Nationale des Mines de Paris under the supervision of Bruno Latour and Antoine Hennion. Her curatorial research includes many national and international exhibitions, workshops, festivals, and public seminars. She is a member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), a consultant and curator at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Cendere Art Museum, and a founding member of FEMeeting – Women in Art, Science, and Technology. In 2022, she was awarded the Rosalind Franklin Science Award for her innovative work at the intersection of science, technology, and art.
