State of the Art in Digital Technologies: New Wave AI, Promises, and Problems

Time: 15:00 – 16:30

Speaker: Güven Güzeldere

Moderator: Emre Şan

"New Wave Artificial Intelligence" has progressed with a speed that most of us could not have predicted even 10 years ago, and even those working in the field could not have foreseen 20 years ago. The rapid development and widespread adoption of digital computer-based technologies have played a major role in this. So, what does this new paradigm promise us for the future, and what problems does it inherently contain? I believe that models like ChatGPT offer us tools that are more powerful than any we have encountered before, and we do not have the luxury of turning our backs on this development. Still, on the other hand, these models inherently contain serious problems such as reliability and interpretability/explainability. That is, we will see the new AI tools becoming increasingly and rapidly widespread, but the "subjective authority attribution" we make based on these models will continue to be problematic, at least in the near future. In this presentation, I will try to address how we should strike a balance between these two poles.

Güven Güzeldere is a cognitive scientist, and a philosopher of mind and science. He completed his undergraduate studies in Computer Engineering at Boğaziçi University, and his master's degrees in Computer Science and Philosophy at Indiana University. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy and Symbolic Systems from Stanford University while working as a researcher at the Intelligent Systems laboratory of the XEROX Palo Alto Research Center. Since 1997, he has served as a faculty member in Philosophy, Psychology, and Cognitive Neuroscience at Duke and then Harvard Universities; he has taught as a visiting faculty member at Boğaziçi and Vienna Universities. He has published numerous articles and edited books in the fields of cognitive sciences, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and philosophy. He is currently working on two books: one on the problem of consciousness in humans and animals, and the other on the history of Artificial Intelligence. Since 2012, he has been preparing and presenting a weekly popular science and philosophy program titled "Açık Bilinç" on Açık Radyo.
