Literature and Jazz
Since the 1930s, jazz–as it gained recognition particularly in Europe–has captured the attention of existentialist writers, most notably Jean-Paul Sartre. By the 1960s, the Beat Generation embraced bebop as a literary language, not only writing works that directly addressed jazz but also weaving it into the tastes and inner lives of their characters. This literary fascination has endured into the present, with contemporary authors such as Haruki Murakami. A true jazz enthusiast, Murakami incorporates jazz both thematically and rhythmically into his works. As part of the 35th Akbank Jazz Festival, the “Literature and Jazz” talk will take place on October 11 at Arter, featuring Hülya Tunçağ as moderator and İnci Aral and Esra Kayıkçı as guests. The conversation will explore the intersections of writing, language, and sound.
