Istanbul Encyclopedia’s Music

The music of Ottoman Istanbul is also present in Reşat Ekrem Koçu's Istanbul Encyclopedia, a compilation of the "sad" and "strange" history of the city. Çağlar Fidan presents a selection from the notes of old Istanbul songs in the encyclopedia, from the cantos of female singers such as Şamram and Peruz Hanımlar, who used to perform in Galata "batakhanes" and became famous among the mob of late Ottoman Istanbul, and from the musical tastes of the tulumbacis (fireman) who settle in the city's musical coffeehouses. Erhan Bayram (Istanbul kemençe) and Nikos Papageorgiou (lavta) accompany Çağlar Fidan.
