Jaubi
Jaubi skips around the genres of North Indian classical music, modal jazz, and hip-hop. The instrumental quartet takes its name from an Urdu word that roughly translates to “whatever / whoever.” Jaubi first caught the attention of the global scene in 2016 with their remarkable cover of J Dilla’s “Time: The Donut of the Heart”. In 2019, UK Jazz stalwart and multi-instrumentalist Tenderlonious and EABS/Bloto keyboardist Marek ‘Latarnik’ Pędziwiatr travelled to Lahore, Pakistan to take part in some improvised recording sessions with Jaubi, composed of Ali Riaz Baqar, Zohaib Hassan Khan and Kashif Ali Dhani. This collaboration resulted in the albums Ragas from Lahore and Nafs at Peace. Following their debut album Nafs At Peace—which made it onto The Guardian’s “Top 10 Global Albums” list in 2021—their second album A Sound Heart, released last year, marks the new chapter for the collective both sonically and spiritually. Committed to the guiding principle of creating whatever sounds good and whatever feels good, Jaubi will perform on October 9 as part of the 35th Akbank Jazz Festival in collaboration with Salon İKSV.
