Resolving a problem of western art, the dilemma of art and craft, through ancient Chinese Art in his ceramic works, Ai Weiwei also establishes deep-rooted links between democracy, freedom of expression and art. He makes use of art as a manifestation of his identity as an activist.
Utilising Chinese history, culture and art as found objects in his art, Ai Weiwei thus attempts at merging the avant-garde values of the West with the values of the traditional Chinese handcrafts.
An instructor of ceramics in the Department of Fine Arts at Boğaziçi University, Sakine Çil will examine this juxtaposition in her presentation titled “Ai Weiwei and Ceramic Art” at Akbank Sanat on Tuesday, 21 November 2017 at 18:30.
