‘Sound Art’ with A Historical Prospect

Speaker: Başar Ünder
About the Seminar: ‘Sound Art’ with A Historical Prospect’ seminar was designed as a two-hour program that focuses on sound or practices that covers sound, questions approach to sound, environmental sound, noise as an art form, and seeks an answer to the question of how sound is displayed with the participants. The first half of the workshop proceeds in the context of recording and music technologies, sound arts, and electronic music history, while in the second half of the workshop participants will have the opportunity to examine sound art and installation examples in a technical and conceptual context.

About the Speaker: Başar Ünder was born in Istanbul, 1984. Ünder studied Sound Engineering and Design along with Electronic Music Composition at Istanbul Technical University MİAM - Centre For Advanced Studies in Music. In 2006, he was invited to Institut International de Musique Electroacoustique de Bourges (IMEB) as a resident music composer funded by UNESCO Aschberg Bursaries for Artists. In 2014 he was awarded for the Best Music at the most prestigious film festival in Turkey, the 51st International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival and he also contributed to the Anthology of Turkish Experimental Music 1961-2014 album by Sub Rosa with his work Diving. In 2016 he was invited to a special programme in Berlin Film Festival, called Berlinale Talents (Sound Studio). Ünder was selected among 2600 applications and that was the first time a composer from Turkey was selected to this programme where he had networking opportunities, workshops and seminars with industry veterans. In 2017 he became a voting member of the European Film Academy and in the same year he had attended Residency for Contemporary Music and Electronics Ponta do Sol, on the Island of Madeira. By 2018 he started to teach Game Audio and Advanced Game Audio classes at Bahçeşehir University Digital Game Design department in Istanbul. He has composed music and/or designed sounds for 4 feature films, 4 works for stage and many video games, shorts, documentaries, animations and ads. Besides his releases which are available on digital platforms, he sings and plays the electronics with his band ‘eqho’; he improvises solo with his experimental/electronic/noise setup.
