“I have the clear feeling that stretching out and being creative happens organically, avoiding alienation and stiffness, when done in energetic connection with my roots – with the groundedness and sensuality of the hymns and the spirituals and the lullabies I grew up with.” This is how pianist and composer Tord Gustavsen defines his constantly evolving form of musical expression. Since 2003, the Norwegian orchestra chief has recorded albums with various groups under the ECM label. His musical universe consists of memorable melodies and subtle rhythms with a rare depth and clarity. An important part of his musical practice is opening up space for dialogue between jazz throughout its history and Scandinavian traditions. Gustavsen came together with bassist Steinar Raknes to form the latest iteration of his trio, which released the album Opening in April 2022. Gustavsen has been a guest of Akbank Sanat in previous years’ festivals. This time, he will reunite with local fans on October 7 at Zorlu PSM Turkcell Platinum Stage.
