Jaco Van Dormael 9 Şubat 1957’de Belçika’da doğdu. Brüksel'in ünlü film okulu INSAS’ta öğrenciyken çektiği ilk kısa filmi Maedeli la Brèche, 1981 Akademi Ödüllerinde En İyi Öğrenci Filmi ödülünü kazandı. Van Dormael'in ilk uzun metrajlı filmi Toto le Héros (1991), Cannes Film Festivali'nde Camera d'Or ödülünü kazandı. Beş yıl sonra, Le huitième jour (1996) filmi Cannes’da ana yarışmada gösterildi ve, iki başrol oyuncusu Daniel Auteuil ve Pascal Duquenne birlikte En İyi Erkek Oyuncu ödülünü kazandı. Prömiyerini Venedik Film Festivali’nde yapan üçüncü uzun metrajlı filmi Mr. Nobody (2009), festivalde Biografilm ödülünü kazandı. En İyi Film ve En İyi Yönetmen dahil olmak üzere Belçika'nın Oscar'ları olarak bilinen Magritte Ödülleri'nde altı ödülün sahibi oldu.
