"In Search of Afife Jale's Grave"

Speaker: Boğos Çalgıcıoğlu

Moderator: Noyan Ayturan

Boğos Çalgıcıoğlu, based on a funeral photograph that he saw in the book of Özdemir Nutku " Dar-ül Bedai’den Şehir Tiyatrosuna", started to search for Afife Jale's burial place in 2018. It performs various calculations with available data, information and estimates, and negotiates with engineers to access accurate measurements. With the information obtained from the expeditions in the field, maps and aerial imaging studies and technical maps made from the 40s to 2016 are brought together and the region where Afife Jale's tomb is located is finalized. The next thing to do will be to inform the public by engaging the authorities.…

Boğos Çalgıcıoğlu: As well as his researches on the history of Ottoman Armenian theatre, he is also known for his translations from Armenian to Turkish. Another feature of the researcher is that he goes after the lost graves of the important names of our theatre. After the tomb of Güllü Agop, the founder of the European-style Turkish theatre, he determines the location of Afife Jale's grave as well, again after a long search. Known as the first Muslim actress to appear on the stage, the cemetery where Afife Jale is buried has been the subject of various debates for years and no agreement has been reached on its location.

Noyan Ayturan: After completing his undergraduate education in Physics, he received his master's degree from Istanbul University, Department of Theatre Criticism and Dramaturgy. He studied acting and mime at Istanbul University State Conservatory Pantomime Major of Art, Theater de l'Ange Fou - London International School of Physical Mime and Studio Actors, and is pursuing his doctorate in dramaturgy. He gave lectures in the performing arts departments of Istanbul, Haliç, Yeditepe, Yeni Yüzyıl and Beykent Universities. In addition to directing theatre plays, he produces academic content on theatre at an online video platform called Hausbühne.
