Ali Perret “Octopus Band”
Composed intermittently since 2006 and completed in 2025, Ali Perret’s compositions originally written for a five-part horn and rhythm section have been reimagined for an eight-piece jazz ensemble that draws inspiration from the rich orchestration of Balkan, Fanfare, Romani brass bands. Blending Perret’s identities as both composer and performer, the music unfolds as a contemporary jazz fanfare that resembles an expansive musical playground through its modern, free, at times playfully childlike, yet always structurally balanced vibe. The ensemble’s debut album Isonomy, recorded at Hayyam Studios in May 2025, is set for release this fall. As part of the 35th Akbank Jazz Festival, the Octopus Band will make its world premiere on October 4 at Akatlar Cultural Center, marking its first ever live performance.
