Arturo Sandoval
Arturo Sandoval, as one of the figures who shaped the history of jazz, is a versatile composer and performer who masterfully blends an explosive fusion of jazz, classical, rock and Afro-Cuban sounds. A protégé of the legendary Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval helped revolutionize Cuban music as a founding member of the groundbreaking group Irakere. The 10-time Grammy-winning musician, a virtuoso of trumpet and flugelhorn, has collaborated as a composer and arranger with a dazzling constellation of stars spanning from Stevie Wonder to Frank Sinatra, and from Celia Cruz to Alicia Keys. He developed an interdisciplinary compositional practice through his trumpet concertos, concerts performed with symphonic orchestras and the music he produced for cinema projects. Defined by the London Evening Star as "the sort of virtuoso artist who comes along only once or twice in a generation," Sandoval will take the stage on October 8 at Zorlu PSM Turkcell Platinum Stage as part of the 36th Akbank Jazz Festival.
