"The Current State of Digital Technologies: 'New Wave Artificial Intelligence', Promises and Problems"

Speaker: Güven Güzeldere

Moderator: Emre Şan

The "New Wave of Artificial Intelligence" has made progress at a speed that most of us could not have predicted ten years ago, and even those working in the field twenty years ago would not have anticipated. This is largely due to the rapid development and proliferation of digital computer-based technologies. So, what does this new paradigm promise for the future, and what issues does it inherently carry? I believe that while models like ChatGPT offer us unprecedentedly powerful tools, we cannot afford to turn our backs on these developments. However, these models also bring significant issues, such as reliability, interpretability, and transparency, that are intrinsically problematic. In this presentation, I will explore how we might strike a balance between these two poles.

Güven Güzeldere is a cognitive scientist and philosopher of mind. He completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering at Boğaziçi University and his master's degrees at Indiana University in the Departments of Computer Science and Philosophy. He earned his Ph.D. at Stanford University in the fields of Philosophy and Symbolic Systems, where he worked as a researcher at the Intelligent Systems Lab of Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. Since 1997, he has held faculty positions at Duke and Harvard Universities in Philosophy, Psychology, and Cognitive Neuroscience and has been a visiting professor at Boğaziçi and Vienna Universities. He has published numerous articles and edited books in cognitive sciences, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and philosophy. Since 2012, he has produced and hosted a weekly popular science and philosophy program Açık Bilinç on Açık Radyo.
