“Re:Use in Filmmaking” Training and Workshop
Every film begins with a choice: what to make, and what to make it from. For decades, the default answer to the second question has been "shoot new footage", more cameras, more crew, more travel, more equipment. The environmental cost of this assumption has rarely been questioned.
Perhaps it is time to ask a different question: Do we need to produce anew for every film?
Organized in collaboration between EkoFilm: Sustainable Production Platform and FfilmSchool, this program will bring film teams together at Akbank Sanat to explore re-use, resource stewardship, and sustainable filmmaking practices. The program is supported by the British Council’s Connections Through Culture grant scheme.
The full-day event will feature a morning of training and discussion sessions, followed by one-on-one project feedback consultations in the afternoon.
Application
We are looking for projects that offer an opportunity to question, adapt, or rethink existing production choices. We welcome applications from filmmakers and projects at all levels of experience, working across all film types and formats - from fiction and documentary to experimental and hybrid works, and short- and feature-length films.
We are especially interested in projects where technical and creative decisions can be reconsidered throughout the production process, whether in relation to cinematography, sound, editing, production design, workflow, format, equipment, or post-production.
*You do not need to already have a sustainability plan or extensive experience with sustainable filmmaking.
Evaluation Criteria
Project stage and feasibility: The project should be at a stage where production decisions can still be influenced or adapted.
Reuse potential: There should be opportunities to reuse, repurpose, rent, borrow, recover or share materials and resources.
Creative potential: Reuse could contribute to the film's visual language, storytelling or creative identity, not just reduce waste.
Environmental impact: There should be identifiable areas where resource use, waste, transport, energy or other environmental impacts could be addressed.
* The medium of the workshop is English. Selected teams may take part with a maximum of 4 people, and team members are welcome to support one another with English and/or Turkish communication.
