Radio, Television and Jazz
Following World War II, broadcasting institutions and the art scene in Europe played a significant role in accepting jazz as an art form. Many radio and television networks, most notably the BBC, provided a platform for the genre's development by forming jazz orchestras alongside chamber music ensembles and classical orchestras. Especially from the 1990s onwards, these broadcasting orchestras took this support to a new level by hosting inspiring conductors, arrangers, and soloists from the jazz world. In Turkey, the TRT Light Music and Jazz Orchestra was one of the leading institutions to take on this role. The Radio, Television, and Jazz panel, taking place at Minoa Pera on October 11 and moderated by Hülya Tunçağ, brings together two esteemed guests. Musician Sibel Köse, who has been active in both local and international jazz scenes for many years, and Cem Tuncer, conductor of the TRT Istanbul Radio Light Music and Jazz Orchestra since 2022, will discuss the historical role of radio and television in the development of jazz. They will explore the vital place these orchestras hold within jazz history through examples.
