Philosophy Seminars - Digital Technologies, Critique and Society II
“Technological Art: Creation Processes in the Dialectic of Human and Technology”
Time: 15:00 – 16.30
Speaker: Selçuk Artut
Moderator: Emre Şan
As the share of non-human actors such as artificial intelligence, algorithms, and processors in the artistic and social ecosystem increases today, the concept of "subject" in the age of technology is increasingly subjected to an irresistible paradigm shift. The creative subject is moving away from being a singular human, and a collective consciousness understood as the collaboration of human and technology is coming to the fore. Human nature is a technical being, as it is the only living creature that produces tools for survival and develops these tools across generations. In this process of production and development, human perception, mind, and corporeality also undergo a distinct transformation as they adapt to the change. This transformation gives rise to a new type of human: homo technologicus. In this talk, we will attempt to question and examine the creation processes in the dialectic of human and technology, looking through the perspective of homo technologicus and focusing on Selçuk Artut's artworks.
Selçuk Artut’s (1976) artistic research and production focus on the theoretical and practical dimensions of the human-technology relationship. His works have been exhibited at the Dystopie Sound Art Festival (Berlin, 2018), Moving Image NY (New York, 2015), Art13 London (London, 2013), ICA London (London, 2012), Art Hong Kong (Hong Kong, 2011), and the 10th Istanbul Biennial (Istanbul, 2007), and have been featured in media outlets such as Artsy, Creative Applications, CoDesign, Visual Complexity, and CNN GO. Artut completed his Ph.D. in Media and Communication at the European Graduate School in Switzerland and currently runs the Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design program at Sabancı University, where he teaches Sound and Interaction courses. He has released several albums with the post-rock avant-garde music group Replikas, of which he has been a member since 1998. In 2016, he co-founded RAW, a sound and visual performance group that produces works using the live coding method, with Alp Tuğan.
