Ebru Uygun

Untitled, 2009

Acrylic, Glue, Cloth pieces on canvas, 200X194 cm

Ebru Uygun, who constructs the essence of her paintings by probing the elements within the medium itself, unveils her latest works that transcend the confines of canvas surfaces. In this iteration, she shifts the focal point of her practice beyond the canvas's exterior. The inward folds characteristic of her early pieces, where the canvas unravels to envelope itself, have been replaced in her new creations by an outward movement. This movement not only separates the context from a conceptual plane but also renders it visible.

Directly engaging with the material, Ebru displays the canvas swath and applies paint with a deliberate yet disorderly approach. Frequently encountering topographic sequences beyond her control, she deliberately refrains from imposing control, allowing rhythmic, fluid surfaces to withhold their tensions at first glance.

Ebru's preference for tearing over cutting and her reliance on hands rather than tools have been consistent throughout her artistic journey. Within the constraints of a limited space and against the backdrop of an infinite ground, she propels herself forward on the wavelength of chance. Her fascination lies in the juxtaposition of the Same, the similar. Ebru is meticulously crafting a catalog of her own, exploring the interplay of difference and repetition. The artistic realm she creates resides in a plastic dimension, devoid of requiem, saga, or narrative—only a sequence, a succession.

While birds may not be overtly visible in her paintings, the concepts of flight, stripes, and streaks are subtly woven into the artistic fabric she meticulously constructs.
