Jazz Elements in the Works of İlhan Mimaroğlu
Turkey's pioneering electronic music composer İlhan Mimaroğlu was also a devoted jazz enthusiast. Following his move to the birthplace of jazz, the USA, he authored Amerika Sesleri (Sounds of America), and shortly after, penned Turkey's first book on the genre, Caz Sanatı (The Art of Jazz). Beyond his literary contributions, Mimaroğlu held a vital, key position—not only in Turkey but globally—in spreading the jazz culture we are so enamored with. He achieved this through his singular critiques published across numerous magazines and newspapers, his bold radio programs, and the iconic records he produced. In a joint conversation, Leyla Diana Gücük and Alper Maral will first trace the broad outlines of this lifelong endeavor. This will be followed by a masterclass thoroughly examining the jazz elements that occupy a distinctly personal place in the composer's works, spanning both electronic and conventional instrumental music. Taking place on October 4 at the ARTER - Sevgi Gönül Auditorium, the event requires no professional or technical knowledge from its participants; a sincere interest and curiosity about this exceptional music and striking body of work is all that is needed.
