Book Club: Books That Spark Thinking on Production
Book: How I Failed to Meet Agnès Varda - Ece Ger
Time: 18:30 - 20.00
Speaker: Ece Ger
Moderator: Esra Ece Kuleci
In this session of the series, we are hosting writer Ece Ger, the author of How I Failed to Meet Agnès Varda and also the director of the film Meeting Jim. Readers of the book encounter, as the title suggests, a story of not meeting—one that begins with Ger moving into the back street of Agnès Varda. Starting from the book, we will listen to the author reflect on both the production process of Meeting Jim and how a story of not meeting transforms into a book. Together, we will discuss what production processes and states of “not meeting” have to say to us today.
Ece Ger was born in Vienna in 1989. After completing her undergraduate degree in Cinema at Istanbul Bilgi University, she earned a master’s degree in Film Theory through the University of Kent’s Paris program. Her documentary Meeting Jim, which had its world premiere at the 71st Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2018, has been screened in more than twenty cities at numerous festivals and on various digital platforms. The film was broadcast on the BBC and received the “Best Documentary” award at the Boston Turkish Film Festival in 2020. In Turkey, Meeting Jim has continued its journey on MUBI since 2021. Begun in 2020, How I Failed to Meet Agnès Varda is Ece Ger’s first book.
