Akış / Flux
Akbank Sanat Exhibition Program

31 January - 26 April 2020
Akış / Flux is a collaboration between Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM), Akbank Sanat and Marina Abramović Institute (MAI) marking a major survey of Abramović’s work and the largest exhibition dedicated to performance art in the history of Istanbul.

At Akbank Sanat, within the scope of the Akış / Flux exhibition, MAI will present a series of documentation exhibitions and a screening program on Abramović’s work. The exhibition explores the recent and past histories of performance art and the legacy that informs the practice today. The documentation exhibitions, consisting of four different themes, aim to introduce performance art to a public that might be unfamiliar with performance art as a discipline, as well as contribute to an existing local dialogue on this field.

Performance Documentation Program
MAI presents a series of documentation exhibitions using the themes Energy, Memory, Limits, and Private / Public, to create an understanding of performance art, and to provide another context to Abramović’s exhibition and the currently happening performances by the Turkish and international artists at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum. Documentations will be exhibited under four different themes between 31 January – 25 April:

Energy: 31 January - 22 February 2020
Energy will include works in which different artists handle an exchange of energy within a performance. Energy deals with presence and is at the core of performance.

Memory: 25 February - 14 March 2020
Memory deals with presenting and accessing personal experiences through performance.

Limits: 17 March - 4 April 2020
Limits will exhibit the body in which performers test limits and pain.

Private / Public: 7 April - 25 April 2020
Private / Public will look at internal and external spaces and the body’s relationship to society.

The Screenings Program
The film screenings a part of Flux / Akış at the Akbank Sanat deepen the understanding of Marina Abramović and MAI’s work, through documentaries, video works, and archival interview reels. The films explore the multifaceted elements of performance practice, including the making of a performance exhibition and artwork, the preservation of an artist’s legacy, and artistic endeavors that step beyond the boundaries of art.
