Where Do You Draw the Line? - Talks and Workshop Program

Talk: "Where Do Directing Teams Stand on the Line?"

Time: 15.00 – 16.30

Speakers: Beril Ateşoğlu, Gamze Öğüt

Moderator: Ruken Doğu Erdede

Feminist scholars point out that filmmaking is a collective form of production and take a critical stance toward the notion of the “auteur” or director-centered cinema that glorifies a single individual. They draw attention instead to the presence of invisible labor, shared decision-making, and the polyphonic nature of production behind the scenes.

In this talk, we will be joined by Beril Ateşoğlu and Gamze Öğüt, who have both worked in directing teams for many years, to discuss how a film set is collectively constructed, the role of the directing team within the production process, and the responsibilities, collaborations, and forms of solidarity among the different professions that make up this team.

Beril Ateşoğlu, was born in Ankara in 1987. After completing her primary, secondary, and high school education at METU (Middle East Technical University), she graduated with a scholarship from Başkent University’s Faculty of Communication. She has been working in the film industry since 2008, primarily in the directing department. Celebrating her 17th year in the sector, Ateşoğlu has worked as an assistant director on nearly 100 commercials as well as numerous television and film projects. Among the most well-known productions she has contributed to are Tolga Karaçelik’s Butterflies and Çağan Irmak’s series Yeşilçam and Gibi.  She recently directed a short film exploring the subtleties and significance of human connection, which is currently in the music and editing phase. She continues to pursue her work with the aim of drawing inspiration from life, people, and all forms of art, while approaching everything with dedication and understanding despite all circumstances.

Gamze Öğüt, graduated from the Film and Television Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSGSÜ). She completed part of her studies in the Film Studies program at École cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL). Beginning her career in the directing department as an assistant director, she has worked with numerous filmmakers on both cinema and commercial productions, including international and independent projects. She has also contributed to the writing teams of several television series. During her student years, she wrote and directed short films. She continues to develop her own film projects and is currently preparing to shoot her upcoming short film Welcome, which is in pre-production.

The event will take place at Kadir Has University / Cinema B. Entrances will be through Door D.
