Akbank Sanat Literature Talks - Do Humans Change?
“The Birth of the Novel and the Modern Individual”
Prepared and presented by: Didem Bayındır & Başak Gürbüz
Time: 18.00 - 19.30
Considered the first example of the modern novel, Don Quijote may look like a parody of chivalric romances, but it is, far beyond that, a peerless masterpiece depicting the individual's struggle between reality and imagination. In this part of our series, we will discuss with Miguel de Cervantes why the novel emerged as a genre in the seventeenth century, and the effects of the printing press, urbanisation, and the rise of individuality on literature. By this point in the series, the novel - which took the place of the epic and became the fundamental narrative form of the modern world - will be firmly in our hands.
