Akbank Sanat Literature Talks - Do Humans Change?
“The Industrial Revolution, Realism, and Society”
Prepared and presented by: Didem Bayındır & Başak Gürbüz
Time: 18.00 - 19.30
The nineteenth century is the period in which literature turned from the individual towards society. It was in this era that Les Misérables [The Wretched] — one of the greatest novels ever written on justice, poverty, and social inequality, and Crime and Punishment, which delves into the depths of the modern individual's conscience and moral responsibility, were written. In this conversation, we will discuss how the urbanisation, class conflicts, and the idea of the modern state brought about by the Industrial Revolution transformed literature, and how realism became one of the most powerful tools for understanding society.
